Sequence of Gameplay in PokerIn poker, actions follow a certain sequence. While there may be a number of poker variations, most poker games usually have a particular order of actions. This is just one of the things that bring the many different kinds of poker games together. Another thing that brings different poker games together is the hand rankings. A poker hand has five cards, but in some poker variants, the player can have more than five cards to choose from, so that they can form their hand. Before the cards are dealt, the person designated to be the first to take an action makes a mandatory forced bet, so that there can be a pot in the first place. Afterwards, the dealer shuffles the cards and asks the person to their right to cut the cards for them. The dealer then distributes the cards one at a time, according to what kind of poker game is being played. After the first player's turn, actions normally proceed clockwise, so that the next person to make a bet would be the person to the previous player's left. On each person's turn, the player must match the previous bet, raise it, or fold. When a person folds, it is usually because they believe that the hand they are holding will not win out against other players' hands and no longer want to put money into a pot that they do not have any more chances of winning. In folding, they forfeit their chances of winning the pot, but are no longer required to bet for this particular hand. On any hand, if all of the players except for one fold, the remaining player gets to win the entire pot. In this sort of scenario, no players have to show any of their hands. This is why it is possible for a person to bluff their way to winning the pot. This feature of the game is what differentiates poker from other kinds of card games that use the same hand rankings. There is usually a limit to how many betting rounds a single poker hand can have. This depends on the poker game being played though. Nonetheless, if, in the final round, more than one player is in contention, these remaining players must show their hand, and whoever has the best hand (according to the game) wins the pot. This final round is called a showdown, because the remaining players must reveal the cards that they have previously kept hidden. |
